The SLA board of directors announced on June 23rd that it has voted to pursue a name change for the organization. SLA's research, part of their Alignment Project, shows that many of their members are not librarians. Many are embedded on teams throughout their organizations, have taken the independent route, or have jobs with titles that don't mention libraries. SLA's research also shows that the word "librarian" does not score well in opinion testing with CEOs.

For more information about the SLA Alignment Project and the results of SLA's market research, visit the SLA website. You can also follow the name-change discussion on this SLA wiki or on Twitter.

This is a discussion worth following. SLA is a large and influential organization within the information industry, and it’s closely related to AIIP. We were honored to have Gloria Zamora and Stephen Abram, President and Immediate Past-President of SLA, attend and speak at the AIIP 2009 Annual Conference in March. Many of our members are SLA members and active volunteers, and AIIP exhibits at their annual conference.

What are your thoughts about the SLA name change? Comment on this blog, or through AIIP-L and our LinkedIn and Facebook groups.

As AIIP President, I had the privilege of representing our association last week at the 2009 SCIP (Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals) conference in Chicago IL USA. Marjorie Desgrosseilliers, AIIP Director of Member Benefits, and I set up and staffed the AIIP exhibit booth, attended some sessions, and met lots of new people.

    Here are a few highlights:

On Wednesday evening, we were invited by AIIP member Ellen Naylor to a reception hosted by SCIP's Women's Leadership Council. We met a wonderful group of leaders, and I'm intrigued by the concept of perhaps establishing a leadership council within AIIP for both men and women. Marjorie and I made sure that everyone at the reception knew about AIIP and our booth in the exhibit hall!

I had the opportunity to attend a session Ellen gave on using cooperative connections for building an early warning system. I'm all about networking, and this was a great overview of how you can use your people connections for research purposes.

Marjorie and I spent the majority of our time at SCIP in the AIIP exhibit booth. We talked with a number of people interested in joining the association and several others wanting information on how to outsource to our members.

We're following up with everyone who gave us business cards and requested additional information.

After spending several days meeting and talking with scores of SCIP members, I feel that exhibiting at the SCIP conference is a great way for AIIP to recruit new members, market our member directory to those who are looking for subcontractors, and raise the association's visibility within the information industry.

Earlier this year, I was interviewed for an article about several associations in the information industry. Written by Tracey Caldwell, the article talks about how these associations are providing professional development opportunities for 21st-century info pros. You can read the full article here.

I’d like to use the i to i Blog to occasionally highlight our AIIP member benefits. I’ll start with our member-only webinars, since we have one coming up on April 16th. In "First-Year Questions,” Risa Sacks (Risa Sacks Information Services) and Cynthia Shamel (Shamel Information Services) answer those important questions that come up when you’re just getting started--and even later on. Go to www.aiip.org/webinars and sign up now. While there, be sure to check out our webinar archives for previous slides and handouts.

Thanks to all our webinar presenters and to Mary Ellen Bates, Webinar Committee Chair, for helping AIIP provide high-quality, easily-accessible professional development opportunities for our members.

In my first post as President, I’d like to introduce the 2009-2010 AIIP Board of Directors:

    Marcy Phelps--President

    Ed Vawter--Immediate Past President

    Margaret King--President-Elect

    Cliff Kalibjian--Treasurer

    Vada Repta--Secretary

    Marjorie Desgrosseilliers--Director, Member Benefits

    Ulla de Stricker--Director, Membership Development

    Andrea Carrero--Director, Marketing and Web

We have three primary areas of focus for this year:

    • Increasing membership recruitment and retention rates
    • Increasing and diversifying AIIP revenues
    • Developing AIIP volunteerism and leadership

If you’d like to read the updated AIIP Strategic Plan and 2009-2010 Operational Plan, go to www.aiip.org/Governance.

In addition to regular updates on board activities, I’ll be posting about AIIP events, members and sponsors. Also look for posts about the information industry and our partners in the industry. And if I come across anything else I think would interest a group of people who own an information business, I’ll be sure to pass that on, too.

Tough economic times can mean more opportunities for independent information professionals. AIIP's 2009 conference presentations and networking sessions in Albuquerque, March 26-29, will help attendees hone their client management and research/analysis skills - to turn more opportunities into paid engagements, and to attract and keep key clients.

From strategic thinking to free vendor training, this conference will cover all the bases. The buzz is good, including this on speaker Stephen Abram, past president of SLA -

Stephen Abram Given the Roger Summit Award

I'm looking forward to a productive and profitable conference. Join us in thanking our key sponsors for 2009 - 10-K Wizard, Dow Jones Factiva, and Dialog, and see more at the AIIP conference web page. If you haven't registered, there's still time!

I want to welcome you to the new AIIP i to i blog.  First, an explanation on the name.

Since we first introduce our new logo earlier this year, many people have commented on the new colors and the tag line "Knowledge Delivered" but one of the most oft commented on features, once people finally recognize it, is the two i's in the middle shaking hands.  It is a unique feature to the logo and everyone seems to like it as it conveys that one-on-one approach that most of us have to our businesses. Because of this the board has decided to name the new blog i to i.

I'm writing this as I'm finishing packing to head off to London for Online Information.  I enjoyed it immensely last year and am looking forward to it again this year; making comments at the AIIP President's Breakfast and giving a talk entitled "Choosing & Implementing a Web 2.0 Site for Your Organization".  I'm going to be talking about the process AIIP went though to design and implement a Web 2.0 website.  I hope if you are attending the show you'll stop by Theatre D at 11 AM on Tuesday Dec. 2nd to hear about it.

Finally, if you are attending the show, please stop by stand #120 and say hi.  We are bringing our new booth to the show this year so come by and see it if you haven't had a chance to yet. I think it looks great! We are very pleased with it and many thanks go to our Director of Marketing, Wendy Cobdra for all her hard work making that happen.

If I have time, I'm going to try and do some blogging from the Online Information so come back next week to hear all about it.
